Go for Broke

In 1943 the Army formed the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Its enlisted ranks were Nisei — American-born sons of Japanese immigrants. Many had families in the camps created after Executive Order 9066. They still volunteered.

They fought in Italy, southern France, and the Vosges. The Army’s own history calls the 442nd the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the U.S. military: twenty-one Medals of Honor among them. In 2010 Congress awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, collectively, to the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd, and the Military Intelligence Service.

This is not a rewrite that erases the camps. Internment was a real American wrong, later named in statute. The 442nd is what the same country also did: men who were owed an apology still kept the oath. That is adherence, not a mood.
